“Sharks!” Max squealed, trying to balance on the rocks along the shore of Crystal Lake. He dipped in one bare toe and quickly pulled it out again.

Ellie climbed onto the moss-covered rocks beside him, under Gran’s watchful eye.

“Careful, kids,” Gran called from her blanket on the grassy shore. “Those might be slippery!”

Gabby, Ava, and Bella had followed Papa out to the end of a long pier, where he was prepping his fishing pole.

Maggie hung back, watching from shore. With the sun glinting off the water, she could see why it had been named “Crystal Lake.” If she could gather up those “diamonds” sparkling on the water, she could buy all the Shopkins she’d ever wanted. Including a new Marsha Mellow for me, she thought. And maybe one for Ava.

Ava hadn’t so much as looked her way since they’d set out on the trail. Maggie fought another wave of sadness rising in her chest. She took a deep, shaky breath and walked out onto the pier.

Gabby sat on one side, her legs dangling down toward the water.

“Are you going to fish?” Maggie asked, squatting beside her. She was thrilled when Gabby actually looked her way.

“Nah,” said Gabby. “I heard there are sharks in this lake.” Her face was dead serious for a moment, and then she broke into a lopsided smile.

Maggie giggled. “I heard there were whales!” It felt so good to be laughing with her best friend again.

When Papa offered her the fishing pole, she took it. She stood up and cast the lure as far out as she could, and then watched the red and white bobber float peacefully on the water’s surface. Papa had taken Maggie fishing lots of times, only usually Max was elbowing her out of the way to get a turn.

Why wasn’t he doing that today?

Maggie glanced to her left at the rocky shoreline. Max and Ellie were playing together happily—for the first time ever. If those two could get along, it gave Maggie hope that maybe she and Ava could make peace, too.

“Do you want to take a turn, Ava?” she asked, looking along the other side of the pier, where Ava and Bella were sitting together. She figured Ava would say no. The last thing that girl would want to touch would be a worm or a slimy fish. But it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Ava narrowed her eyes at Maggie. She licked her lips and then said slowly, “No, thank you. I wouldn’t want you to think that I stole your fish.”

Ouch.

So much for making peace.…

When the pole bounced in Maggie’s hands, she quickly began reeling in the lure.

“Looks like you’ve got something!” said Papa, holding on to his hat as if they were in a boat, reeling in a big one.

Gabby sprang to her feet to stand beside Maggie, shading her eyes to see what might be on the other end of the line. Even Ava and Bella turned toward the end of the pier, watching silently.

As the “fish” got closer, though, something felt off.
